Bringing in the new while enhancing the old

As most of our guests know, we are a family owned business and have been since we opened our doors in 1959. For decades our guests have enjoyed our oceanfront accommodations while they explore La Jolla and all it has to offer, and our team is always on hand to ensure they have a great time while they are with us.

With our hotel being 55 years old, we work hard to make improvements to our property while still maintaining its charm. Recently we have been adding various new accommodations to La Jolla Cove Suites to make our guests stay more enjoyable!

While enjoying you complimentary breakfast on the rooftop you can kick your feet up enjoying the view on our new tables. The little ones will surely love our new pint-sized picnic tables with padded seats and matching umbrellas!

After having our made to order waffles you can enjoy a bike ride through the Village at $15 dollars per hour or $45 dollars for the day!

With upcoming enhancements to our rooms we hope that all of our families and couples enjoy their stay at our retro hotel.

Mouthwatering Dessert Choices

Mmm, that wonderful point of the wedding planning checklist where you see it’s time to go taste cakes!  One of the few appointments that your fiance is really excited to attend!  But there are so many options when it comes to desserts, you don’t want to head out to bakeries without having an idea of what you’re looking for.  You could absolutely have the traditional wedding cake and save the top layer for your anniversary, or you could have an array of other delicious items…

Fondant CakeTraditional Cake

“Traditional” does not have to mean boring!  Bakers can do pretty much anything you can imagine with a cake.  Just think of all the reality shows dedicated to cake baking.  Usually though, you’ll attend a cake tasting and be invited to taste their fondant icing, whipped cream icing and butter cream icing.  All three can give you different “looks” to your cake. Typically, the fondant may not taste as good but it’s the one you want to use when you want a cake that looks smooth or intricately decorated.

A nice alternative to the wedding cake that has gained popularity over the Cupcake Towerpast few years are cupcakes.  You can rent a cupcake tower or build your own and decorate it to match your wedding theme.  Choose a few different flavors of cupcakes so your guests can try them all.  Cupcake bakeries pride themselves on having a long list of flavors to choose from.  Our neighbor here in La Jolla, Sprinkles Bakery, offers flavors such as peanut butter chip, lemon coconut, salty caramel and chocolate marshmallow just to name a few.  With options like that your guests will be begging for dessert all day long!  if you still want the traditional cake cutting, order a small cut cake just for you and your honey to place on top, or to the side of, the cupcake tower.

Maybe you don’t like cake.  Maybe you want something different.  Ditch the cakes altogether and cut into a warm apple pie!  Nothing says “family” like pie.  Blueberry, apple, pecan… have them all!  Set up a table with vintage pie stands or a cute cabinet like this one with all the pies on display.  Be sure to make labels for the pies so your guests know what they’re cutting into.  Then, get your caterer on board and have them dish up some vanilla bean or cinnamon ice cream to accompany the pie.

Dessert Buffet

And when you just can’t decide, have a dessert buffet!  Set up a table with your favorite pies, a cut cake, a tray or two of cupcakes, grandma’s famous cookies, your favorite candies in apothecary jars, and some tasty whoopie pies for your East Coast guests.  No one will complain that you have too many desserts.

A Wedding to Remember

Last year our team was approached by the folks at Good News Etc. Newspaper who were organizing a Military Wedding Giveaway contest in which one lucky Military couple would win a free wedding valued at over $15,000. We immediately knew that we wanted to be a part of this special event and offered to provide our gorgeous rooftop venue. Finally, in January, we proudly hosted Pati and Luis’ ceremony and reception at La Jolla Cove Suites. It was a beautiful sunny day, like most days on the rooftop, and we could not have been happier to host this couple’s wedding.

They chose mocha linens with simple centerpieces showcasing hydrangeas, roses, and daisies. The centerpieces, which were donated by Flowers of Point Loma, were beautiful and classic. The flowers were arranged in mason jars wrapped with lace covered burlap. This tied in nicely with the linen colors and the rustic feel of their event.

Indulge Contemporary Catering was on hand to make sure the couple and their guests had a delicious dinner, and for dessert Cupcakes Squared donated a gorgeous (and delicious we’re sure) cupcake display. Yum! Pati and Luis really made sure guests would be able to indulge their sweet tooth by placing an adorable candy station not too far from the cupcake table! JL Roofing was kind enough to donate the candy station for this wonderful event.

Photographer Taylor Abeel was busy all day taking pictures of the couple. Some of our favorite photos are included here…

DJ Merrylin Brichmann of Artistic Productions also donated her time and services and had just the right selection of music to create the perfect soundtrack for such a special evening. She made sure the music was timed perfectly for the bride’s walk down the aisle and kept the party lively throughout the night. Also helping to make sure things went smoothly from start to finish, Jeanne Cesena from Vision of the Veil was on hand overseeing each detail of the event.

La Jolla Cove Suites, a Family Legacy

As the year comes to a close we find ourselves thinking back to the events that occurred in the past that allow us the opportunity to be where we are today. With the holidays approaching our team spent some time reflecting on the story of Max Heimburge, the founder of La Jolla Cove Suites. Max’s story is an incredible one, as you will see:

Max Heimburge, the original owner and developer of La Jolla Cove Suites grew up in Stadtilm, Germany in the late 1800′s and immigrated to the United States in 1910 through Ellis Island.

Max worked two years as an army boot repairman in the German army after which he joined the German Shoemakers Union working in a small shoe shop in Munich.

Shortly after entering the United States, Max obtained a job with a New York shoe repair shop where he continued to practice his trade. He saved his earnings and worked his way to the west coast in 1912.

Once established in San Diego, California, Max gained employment in a very small shoe repair shop in downtown San Diego on Broadway. Not long after, he purchased the business, expanding the scope of his business by offering the sale of shoes. This led to the opening of another shoe store with shoe repair on 5th Avenue named Shoe Craft.

By 1941, the small business Max struggled to create had grown into 17 shoe stores throughout San Diego County, under the name Universal Boot Shop. Once well established in the shoe market, Mr. Heimburge invested his capital in various land acquisitions, which eventually led to the purchase of some land on Coast Boulevard in 1946.

By the late fifties, Max had accumulated a portfolio of oceanfront property in La Jolla upon which he built the La Jolla Cove Motel, now known as La Jolla Cove Suites.

Max Heimburge was truly a man of great vision, and the family business he spent a lifetime developing has continued to grow and thrive under the management of Max´s three children, then passed on to his grandchildren.

In keeping with their grandfather´s philosophy of growth and development, in 2001 La Jolla Cove Suites converted its rooftop into a unique oceanfront venue which has hosted hundreds of weddings and other special events over the course of the last twelve years.

Today our team works diligently to maintain the legacy Max left for his family and make improvements to the property so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Burlap & Lace

6 ways to bring these beautiful textures into your wedding

Who would have ever thought these two would make such a beautiful couple (no pun intended). Maybe opposites really do attract! The rough texture of burlap and the soft feminine touch of lace can truly transform your special day into a classic rustic, yet chic, wedding. You can accent your wedding with these small details to capture the rustic outdoors in any venue…preferably La Jolla Cove Suites.

 1. Wedding Invitations

Use actual burlap & lace on your Invitations to play with your guests’ senses. Or for a more casual, less expensive approach there is always photo printed invitations.

 2. Centerpieces Simplicity at its best… masons jars, burlap & lace strips glued on, and your flower arrangement placed inside.

 3. Ceremony Aisle Accents Talk about an inexpensive and adorable way to decorate your ceremony aisle.  As you walk down to say your “I do’s” to the person of your dreams, you will be able to catch a glimpse of these beautiful bows and you will most certainly appreciate the simplicity it brings to your day.

4. Table Runners If you don’t plan on having a communal style reception dinner, no worries, this table runner can be used to make the head table for you and your future partner one that stands out.

5. Cake Décor  Piece of cake.

6. Your Bridal Bouquet  The flower arrangement would be up to you, but with a little piece of burlap and a lace accent on top, it will definitely look rustic chic against your wedding dress as you walk down the aisle to the next step in your life.

Congratulations and happy planning!

Congratulations Brittany and Mike!

This month La Jolla Cove Suites had the honor of hosting Brittany and Mike’s wedding reception. They chose ivory linens and made wooden boxes for their centerpieces. The floral arrangements, provided by White Lotus Productions, beautifully accented the table tops. We especially loved the centerpiece for Brittany and Mike’s head table!

Brittany handmade napkin rings for all of the guests, and each one was unique.  The napkin rings tied into the vintage theme of the reception, which could also be seen in the antique bird cage that was used for cards.

Congratulations Brittany and Mike!

Bringing the Sea …to La Jolla Cove Suites

We were definitely in for a treat when Heather and Rob decided to have their wedding reception at our breathtaking oceanfront oasis. We loved how they brought sea life and vibrant colors into their wedding scape.

Not only was the deep blue sea present, the not-so-typical flower arrangements (who wants typical now ‘a days?) from PB Blossom gave the tables extra depth. The use of ceramic pots gave the daises, roses and lilies a chance to have their own spotlight.

Heather and Rob were married outside with the water behind them at Ellen Browning Scripps Park, right across the street from La Jolla Cove Suites. Adore Wedding Design placed bamboo straw fans near the ceremony area, making sure guests were comfortable while the sea loving couple said their I do’s.

It was a great pleasure to have Heather & Rob share this special day with us and we wish them all the best in the years to come!

Rooftop venue seemlessly transformed from ceremony to reception

We recently had the pleasure of hosting the gorgeous wedding of Jo Jo and Carl on the rooftop. Their wedding was certainly one to remember! Jo Jo handmade 1,000 origami cranes that adorned the chuppa as well as the centerpieces, they were also floating above the cake which was provided by Sweet Cheeks Baking Company. This beautiful bamboo chuppa was provided by Rustic Urban Events.

Jo Jo and Carl really personalized their event with each detail, we especially loved the surfboard which served as the guest book. Guests were provided with markers and signed their names right on the board!

The farm tables provided by Rustic Urban Events served as beautiful head tables, which were decorated with Manzanita tree branches and bright yellow floral arrangements from ArtQuest Flowers and Gifts.

Lounge Appeal provided furniture for a lounge area that was set up near the dance floor, with lighting and draping floating above the entire space. After enjoying a delicious meal provided by Continental Catering, guests moved to the dance and lounge area where flip flops were provided, allowing them to dance in comfort to the music played by Tim Altbaum Productions.

The guest tables, white chivari chairs, dance floor, and lighting were provided by Raphael’s Party Rentals, our favorite party rental company in San Diego! We were so happy to have Melissa Reinke of Sweet Blossom Weddings on site, Melissa assisted Jo Jo and Carl in planning all the details for their fabulous wedding and reception and was here to make sure their special day went just as planned! Thank you Jo Jo and Carl, we were thrilled to host your wedding and reception and can’t wait to see you again on your anniversary!
