Vivid Poetry by a La Jolla Cove Suites Guest

A special La Jolla Cove Suites guest vacationed here regularly with his family in the 1950s and 60s. As an adult he has continued to return to the hotel with his family. On his last visit, his granddaughter wrote this poem, entitled “The Cove.” He presented this poem to our Front Desk upon check in today to celebrate his anniversary!. We hope you enjoy this poem as much as we do.

The Cove
By Lisa McVeigh

It is not a rooster
nor an alarm clock
that wakens me,
That lifts me out of my peaceful
dreams
to the bright new day
It is my senses calling me –
Proclaiming the beauty
Of the Cove in all its wonder

With open eyes,
a clear blue sky becomes visible,
a comely canvas stretched behind
the rocky hillside

Upon removing the sleepy dust,
The ocean comes alive,
Vivacious, turquoise waves
Caressing the sandy shore

La Jolla surrounds me,
Whipping wind against my face
The icy chill of the morning breeze
And the salty mist,
Reaching the tip of my nose
Walking,

The morning passes
And I reach the beckoning smells of
nearby
Restaurants and cafes lining the walk

The palm trees, like sticks,
Swaying,
Fanning the white-feathered birds that
soar
Through their green palms
and over a body of water,
So significantly named

A white bench resting on dry land
A rock towering over the water
Sandals off, and my toes slip into the
Many grains of sand
Relaxing and waiting
